Dear Parents or Guardians,

My name is Char Coffman and I am the Title I teacher. I am excited about working with your child in this wonderful program. I have been a teacher here at Roachdale for 16 years. For the first ten years I taught first grade and the last five in Title I. Six years ago I finished my Masters in Reading from Indiana State University. Also, I have a son who is a seventh grader and one that is under two years old. They always keep me busy.

Julie Heron is one of my assistants. She has helped me for seven years. Julie grew up in Roachdale and is a graduate of North Putnam Community School Corporation. Then she went to Ball State University and graduated with a degree in Marketing. She worked eight years at John Strange Elementary in Indianapolis and at Pittsboro Elementary in an after school program. Julie is married to Tom Heron and they have two children.

Kimber Plemons is another of our Title I assistants . Kimber is in her third year here at Roachdale as a Title I assistant. She has previously worked at North Putnam Middle School and as a substitute teacher with our corporation. Kimber lives in Roachdale with her husband Tom and her son who is in 12th grade.

Your child will be participating in the STAR Title I program this year. Title I is a federally funded program that Roachdale Elementary has had in place for several years. The purpose of STAR is to help the students in the subjects of math and reading.

The students were selected based on four areas of assessment. These assessments were DIBELS, CTBS, ISTEP and Performance Series Testing. Our program is now a pull-out program for thirty minutes of math and reading instruction where needed. We set up a program with the classroom teachers to best meet the needs of each child.

On September 21st in the Title Room here at Roachdale, we will be having a Title I meeting from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm. This is to get every parent together whose child qualifies and explain our program in more detail. Also, it will be a time for you to sign any necessary papers needed for Title.

I am not only here for the students, but for you as well. Throughout the school year I will be coordinating special STAR nights where you and your student will have the opportunity to learn ideas and do activities together here at school. Also, if you have questions or need help with various activities at home for your child, please let me know! My door is always open and I have materials that you may check-out that can help when working with your child. Just call or e-mail me and I will be happy to give you the times I am free. If you have any questions don’t hesitate to contact me at ccoffman@nputnam.k12.in.us or call 522-1732.

Sincerely,

Charetta Coffman, STAR Title I Teacher

Julie Heron, STAR Title I Assistant

Kimber Plemons, STAR Title I Assistant
