Goals and Descriptions
Grade 4

The period represented by grades four through six (4-6) is especially critical in students' musical development. At this level, students are provided with a balanced, comprehensive music curriculum that is developmentally appropriate in the psychomotor, cognitive, and affective domains. Instruction is designed to enable students to connect, examine, imagine, define, try, extend, refine, and integrate music study into other subject areas. Students begin to develop competency in the following:

-    singing, alone and with others, using a varied repertoire;
-    performing on instruments, alone and with others, using a varied repertoire;
-    improvising;
-    composing and arranging music;
-    reading and notating music;
-    listening to, analyzing, and describing music;
-    evaluating music and music performances;
-    understanding relationships between music and the other arts and disciplines outside the arts; and
-    understanding music in relation to history and culture.
