Music - Grade 1

Grade 1

Students in grades kindergarten through grade three (K-3) are provided with a balanced, comprehensive music curriculum that is developmentally appropriate in the psychomotor, cognitive, and affective domains. Instruction is designed to enable students to connect, examine, imagine, define, try, extend, refine, and integrate music study into other subject areas. Activities and experiences in music are designed for students to develop a respect for the art of music and to build the foundation for music literacy. Students begin to develop competency in the following:

-    singing, alone and with others, using a varied repertoire;
-    performing on instruments, alone and with others, using a varied repertoire;
- improvising;
-    composing and arranging music;
-    reading and notating music;
-    listening to, analyzing, and describing music;
-    evaluating music and music performances;
-    understanding relationships between music and the other arts and disciplines outside the arts; and
-    understanding music in relation to history and culture.
